How Mathematicians Use Computers Today
--
How Will They Use Them Tomorrow?
In 1992 I came to MSRI with a mandate to create a model site for the
integration of computing and mathematics. I have gathered a small, but
extremely able, system administration team to enact that mandate. Our
philosophy of individual empowerment, open software, and a hardware
flow have been tempered as we have supported the research efforts of
thousands of mathematicians and enabled the outreach efforts necessary
to make MSRI an `Emissary' of mathematics. Quite recently, we have
hosted a workshop to consider and coordinate the Future of
Mathematical Communication. In this talk, I will try to share some of
our experiences and the lessons we have learned about computing in
today's mathematics. I will conclude by sketching my vision of
computing in the mathematics of tomorrow and how we can get there.
These are my slides.
